To travel to/from Italy it is mandatory to wear a mask FFP2 (sample 1, sample 2) or KN95. All other masks type are not accepted.
There are different entry regulations depending on where you are travelling from.
Category A: The Republic of San Marino and the Vatican City State:
Category B: Countries with low epidemiological risk will be identified among those in List C. At present none of them are present in this list.
Category C: Free movement is allowed to and from these countries for any reason:
- Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Croatia, Denmark (including the Faroe Islands and Greenland), Estonia, Finland, France (including Guadeloupe, Martinique, Guyana, Reunion, Mayotte and excluding other territories outside the European mainland), Germany, Greece, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands (excluding territories outside the European mainland), Poland, Portugal (including the Azores and Madeira), Czech Republic, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Hungary, Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein, Switzerland, Andorra, Principality of Monaco.
Passengers coming from the category C countries above can travel to Italy without quarantine as long as they meet the following criteria:
- In the 14 days prior to entering Italy they have not been in a category E country;
- Have a vaccination certificate (the EU Digital COVID‑19 Certificate issued following recovery from COVID‑19 or similar certification issued by local health authorities is accepted).
- Fill out the Passenger Locator Form prior to entering Italy.
Passengers not vaccinated or vaccinated with a vaccine not EMA approved without a booster dose of an EMA approved vaccine will need to self‑isolate for 5 days and take an COVID‑19 antigen or PCR test at the end of the quarantine.
Category D: The following countries are included in category D:
- Argentina, Saudi Arabia, Australia, Bahrain, Canada, Chile, Colombia, United Arab Emirates, Japan, Indonesia, Israel, Kuwait, New Zealand, Peru, Qatar, Rwanda, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (including Gibraltar, the Isle of Man, Channel Islands and British bases on the island of Cyprus and excluding territories not belonging to the European continent), Republic of Korea, United States of America, Uruguay, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao Special Administrative Regions.
Passengers coming from the category D countries above can travel to Italy without quarantine as long as they meet the following criteria:
- In the 14 days prior to entering Italy they have not been in a category E country
- Have both a COVID‑19 vaccination certificate showing that they were fully vaccinated at least 14 days before arrival with 2 doses plus 1 booster only with EMA approved vaccines: Comirnaty (Pfizer BioNtech), Spikevax (Moderna) Vaxzevria (Astrazeneca), COVID‑19 vaccine Jannsen (Johnson&Johnson) or vaccination certificate showing that they were fully vaccinated with a non‑EMA approved vaccine plus 1 booster of an EMA approved vaccine or a COVID‑19 recovery certificate that confirms that an infection has been overcome in the last 180 days (from United States of America, Canada and Japan also the EU Digital COVID‑19 Certificate issued following recovery from COVID‑19 or similar certification issued by local health authorities is accepted)plus a booster vaccine EMA approved.
- Have a negative molecular swab test taken in the 72 hours or an antigen swab test taken in the 24 hours prior to entering Italy.
- In the case of arrivals from the UK and Northern Ireland and the British Isles, the swab test must be taken in the 48 hours prior to entering Italy.
- Complete the Digital Passenger Locator Form.
In case the booster dose is missing, the validity of the vaccination or recovery certificate is limited to 6 Months. In case the vaccination or the covid‑19 recovery certificate is expired or passengers are vaccinated with a not EMA approved vaccine, they can still travel to Italy as long as they take either an antigen or a molecular test during their stay in Italy. The validity of the tests is 48hours for the antigen and 72 hours for the molecular
Passengers not vaccinated or vaccinated with a vaccine not EMA approved without a booster dose of an EMA approved vaccine will need to self‑isolate for 5 days and take an antigen or PCR test at the end of the quarantine.
Category E: All countries and territories not specifically mentioned in other lists. Travel to/from these countries is only allowed for:
Work
- Health reasons
- Study reasons
- Absolute urgency
- Return to one's domicile, home, or residence.
Passengers coming from the category E countries must present:
- Complete the digital Passenger Locator Form
- A negative molecular swab test taken in the 72 hours or an antigen swab test taken in the 24 hours prior to entering Italy
- Notify the prevention department of the health authority responsible for the area of your entry
- Reach the final destination in Italy only by private transport
- Undergo self isolation at the address indicated on the Passenger Locator Form for 10 days
- Undergo an additional molecular or antigenic swab at the end of the 10day selfisolation period
- These passengers will be allowed to access public transport or any public place (hotels, restaurants, etc.) only if fully vaccinated at least 14 days before arrival with 2 doses plus 1 booster of EMA approved vaccines: Comirnaty (Pfizer BioNtech), Spikevax (Moderna) Vaxzevria (Astrazeneca), COVID19 vaccine Jannsen (Johnson&Johnson); or vaccination certificate showing that they were fully vaccinated with a non‑EMA approved vaccine plus 1 booster of an EMA approved vaccine; or a COVID19 recovery certificate that confirms that an infection has been overcome in the last 180 days plus a booster vaccine EMA approved.

Quarantine exemptions
Unvaccinated passengers travelling from category D and list E countries can travel to Italy without a pre‑entry swab test, self‑isolation and the swab test at the end of self‑isolation if they will be staying in Italy for not more than 120 hours (five days) for work, health or absolute emergency.
They must, however, either immediately leave the country at the end of the 5‑day period or start a 5‑day period of monitoring and self‑quarantine and take a molecular or antigen swab test at the end of quarantine.
Unvaccinated passengers are eligible for this exemption under the following conditions:
- No symptoms of COVID‑19 should arise
- They have filled out the Passenger Locator Form – Digital localisation form ‑ before entering Italy
Unvaccinated passengers who are staff of businesses and entities with registered or secondary offices in Italy who are travelling abroad for work and for trips not longer than 120 hours (5 days) do not need to quarantine upon returning to Italy provided:
- They fill out the Passenger Locator Form – Digital localisation form ‑ before entering Italy
- They undertake the pre‑entry swab test
These passengers will not be allowed to:
- Take any public transport to reach their final destination
- Enter any public place like hotels and restaurants
Passengers from all country categories
Minors below 6 years old travelling to Italy from any country category are exempted from COVID‑19 tests (PCR or antigenic).
Minors below 12 years though not vaccinated will follow the same regulation applicable for the accompanying parents, therefore will be exempted from the self‑isolation only if the accompanying parents are exempted.
COVID‑free tourist travel corridors
There are currently COVID‑free travel corridors for tourist destinations outside of the EU. The tourist travel corridors are operating from Italy to Aruba, Maldives, Mauritius, Seychelles, Dominican Republic, Egypt (limited to the tourist areas of Sharm El Sheikh and Marsa Alam).
